Conceptualized by the clients project team, led by the city of Tampere, Kulttuuripankki began as a simple idea. It was up to me to transform this notion into a fully effective social platform that exceeded all expectations. Through significant architecture, service, and user flow design, I was able to strip the idea down to bare bones. Identifying all conceivable corner cases using quick wireframe prototypes before moving on to full-fledged UX layout design. In the end, I was in charge of the whole design phase, from platform logic to public sector visual brand theme adaptation and quality control.

The major challenge to tackle was with the notion itself. Dividing users into two concurrent user kinds, makers and subscribers, necessitated a user logic architecture that could accommodate both variations. As a social platform, the majority of the material would be created by the users. Identifying and, when necessary, restricting potential content variables was critical to developing a sustainable service.

I approached the project as a full fledged social platform with creator profiles and smart content subscription features. Solving these profile management and user flow paths turned out to be a major part of the design phase itself. Profile specific management options required thorough investment in studying other social platforms and every decision had to rotate around end user actions.

The solution to these challenges draws heavily on modern streaming services and other social platforms. User management was implemented in rudimentary profile setting flows and all of the user specific content variations were identified. User created content was organized into intuitive multi-level sections, supported with powerfull internal search tools and categorization, while the content itself was laid out in uniform fashion covering all possible instance specific content variations.

The end result turned out to be a lot more than the doctor ordered. The project's complexity was not fully appreciated beforehand, and my offered solutions might have been far simpler while still meeting the required criteria. The client received far more than they anticipated, and they are understandably thrilled with the outcome. That day, we gained a valuable lesson in project scope management, but as the developing team, we can still be proud of the end outcome.

End user feedback has been phenomenal. The project has even prompted interest in similar services in other professional fields.

The design of a complete social platform with a large emphasis on user-generated content and diverse user profiles will be complex. There are several user-specific needs and management functions to address, as well as certain probable and unusual corner case scenarios to tackle. Nevertheless, the complexity is what makes it enjoyable. Solving service architectural challenges using UX solutions with responsive and varied content layouts teaches you a lot. Having solved these situations once has already proven useful in establishing comparable service structures on subsequent projects.
